Since the data bottleneck in connections using Trailblazers+compression seems to be in the host-to-modem async link, some higher bandwidth physical link seems to be in order. Is anyone (likely Telebit?) working on modems that sit directly on ether (with no intervening async link)? If not, (and in the interest whetting the mfr's appetites,) how much interest would there be in a product like this? -Peter Lee plee@athena.mit.edu

A modem right off the ethernet might be a bit specialised (although someone does it for AppleTalk); perhaps upping the baud rate to 38.4 or 57.6 Kbaud and dangling it off one of the available ethernet terminal concentrators would work better. This offloads the buffering and interrupt-per-character work from the main processor. -- -Colin
