[comp.dcom.modems] Ethermodems?

plee@athena.mit.edu (Peter Lee) (07/23/90)

Since the data bottleneck in connections using Trailblazers+compression
seems to be in the host-to-modem async link, some higher bandwidth
physical link seems to be in order. Is anyone (likely Telebit?) working
on modems that sit directly on ether (with no intervening async link)?
If not, (and in the interest whetting the mfr's appetites,) how much
interest would there be in a product like this?

A modem right off the ethernet might be a bit specialised (although
someone does it for AppleTalk); perhaps upping the baud rate to
38.4 or 57.6 Kbaud and dangling it off one of the available ethernet
terminal concentrators would work better. This offloads the buffering
and interrupt-per-character work from the main processor.
