[comp.dcom.modems] Summary of PC MNP5 emulation packages

rgc@wam.umd.edu (Ross Garrett Cutler) (08/03/90)

Hello netland...

I found out that the following three software packages emulate MNP5:

MTE from MagicSoft (Lombard, IL; 312-953-2374); $79
Mirror III from SoftKlone (Tallahassee FL; 904-878-8564); $???
	FLASHLINK (vendor unknown); ~$40

My main application is editing files. I called SoftKlone and they
said their package would make my Hayes 2400 faster in that respect.
The guy at MTE didn't think so, but I don't think he was a techie :-).
Does anyone know who makes FLASHLINK?

Anyway, has anyone had any experience with any of the above? If so,
what about speed increase (screen updates, ...). One more question:
are there any PD (free) software packages out there? Thanks...

As far as i know, Flashlink is MTE with a different name. One possible
reason for this could be that MTE is bundled with some modems (thus
the manufacturers can advertise their modems as supporting MNP5 even
though they are standard V.22bis modems!)

Yes, i've used the MTE demo and I must say it works well! As an experiment
I made a file with 250k of 0's and with MNP5 the thing just zipped through
like greased lightning :-)

The MTE demo is available on quite a few BBS's - but its limitation is that
drops carrier after 15 minutes.
