[comp.dcom.modems] telebits / Europe

braun@drivax.UUCP (Karl T. Braun (kral)) (08/07/90)

We are trying to set up communications with someone in Germany. We have a
telebit T2500, they have a T1000. The main purpose of the connection is for
file transfer, but the initiating sequence must be interactive (kermit). Of
course the echo delays are annoying, but they seem to get bounced off after 5
minitues or so (NO CARRIER). We have no problem with local connections.
If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on this, I would appreciate some mail on it.

Thanx,

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new
discoveries, is not "Eureka!" (I found it!) but "That's funny ..."

If they're using an official German Trailblazer, good luck. The Bundespost
in their *infinite* wisdom (dripping sarcasm off), decided to rewrite the
software for the TB. They broke a lot of things rather badly. Most people
I know reckon that if you have an official one, bin it, and buy a US or UK
TB and run it illegally. Maybe things have changed, but I've seen problems
between a US 2500 and a German 1000. I seem to remember that calls worked
OK one way but not the other.
One thing you could try is to enable compensation for the echo cancellers -
it's something like S111=1 (or around that area).
Sorry to be the harbinger of doom but I hate it when stupid PTTs with a nice
monopoly break something that worked brilliantly for no good reason.

Good Luck,
Tim

If they just rewrote the software, couldn't you just acquire some "normal"
ROMs, by fair means or foul, and run those? It would save a lot of money.
I ran my original Telebit ROMs through a PROM blower and got a dump of
their contents, but that was 1988 and they're pretty dated by now.
