I'm confused. About 9600 bps modems. Here's the deal:
1) I'm not filthy-rich --just a little-bit-rich.
2) I see all these *funny things* like HST, v.32, v.42, v.42bis,
MNP, PEP -- which I assume are standards defining
the modulation scheme and/or protocols used to get the
data across the line -- associated with 9600 bps modems.
3) I want to buy a 9600 bps modem that will, with a respectable
chance, be suitable to talk to someone else's 9600 bps
modem.
QUESTION: GIVEN THESE THINGS, WHICH OF THE *FUNNY THINGS* IS (ARE?) OF
PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE?
Peace.

If you want to link to another UNIX box using uucp, you'll need a Telebit. If you want to cruise the Mac and MS-DOS BBS's then you'll want a USR HST or USR Dual Standard. The V.32's seem to be taking over as a standard modem in many applications but the Telebit is much faster running uucp and the USR HST is much more common with BBS's.
