I haven't seen ads for this in the general press yet, but EDN (Electronic
Design News), Sep 3, pp 193 has a product announcement from Sharp Digital
Information Products, 714-261-6224, for the 9624 and 9624e (external),
for $299 and $399 respectively.
"...The modems employ the company's extended baud rate (EBR) technology
which enables a 2400 bps chip set to provide 9600-bps full-duplex comm.
In addition, themodems have 2400-, 1200-, and 300-bps fallback modes. The
modems also employ MNP5 error-checking and correcting protocols. Using
an EBR modem at both ends of a comm link, the unit can achieve four
times the transmission speed of a 2400-bps modem, without bursts which
are common with MNP5 and V.42 bis. Both modems automatically select the
highest speed after checking to confirm that an EBR modem is at the
answering end. The units include a speaker and comply with the Hayes
AT command set. "
Anyone know what this is all about ? Is the 9600-bps the MNP-derived
advantage, or are they really hacking the protocol in some way ?
9600 full duplex for arbitrary data (not by compression, that is)
for $299 sounds too good to be true ....

This is technically possible. The PEP protocol runs 511 channels at 7 baud (yes!) each, while typical 2400 is 600 baud with 4:1 bit/baud mapping.
