I received one vote for each of the modems listed below. There seems to
be little interest in 2400 baud modems now that the price has made them
throw aways if they do not work.

  1. Micom (not Microcom) 2400 bps MNP-4 modem

  2. ZOOM 2400 baud modem

  3. Practical Peripherals

  4. USR 2400

  5. AVATEX 2400

Thanks to: David Lesher, Steven M. Schultz, J. Philip Miller, Ralph Sims,
           and Bill Campbell.

We're using the ATI2400etc/e modems here and they seem to work well.
Built by the same company that brings you the ATI VGA Wonder et al.
They already ship with MNP5 and V.42 and they'll be shipping with
V.42bis very shortly (so I'm told. The street price here is about $280
Canadian.

I have an ATI2400etc/e with MNP5, V.42 and V.42bis. The modem works fine
except it sometimes can't hear BUSY, and after the timeout passes, returns
NO CARRIER. I'm returning the modem to ATI for service.

Wow! I'm a bit stunned, as I've been speaking to ATI on the phone
several times in the last couple of weeks and they swear that they are
not shipping the V.42bis yet (but it's only days away.) Perhaps they
shipped to the USA first.

Anyway, I have the same problem with detecting BUSY. Seems that one
out of every four or five tries, there is a strange click right after
the busy signal starts and the modem is unable to detect on that try.
I'll be interested in knowing if you get the problem solved. If so,
please post the resolution.

Otherwise, a very nice modem.
