This is something that has been going through my mind for quite a long time (over the better part of two years or so) and I hope that maybe I'll get some answers from here. The Telebit modems, as far as I understand, are nothing else than sophisticated computers able to play with bandwith of the phone line at will so as to accomplish their throughput (this is very simplistic at best, but bear with me - the concepts here are more important than the technical aspects). The majority of the PEP protocol is really handled by the frimware tweaking with the hardware, which implies that the firmware could pretty much do anything with the frequency spectrum. Now, as we know some modem manufacturer have been modifying their 2400bps modems to handle 2400bps modem, 4800bps FAX capabilities. Now, I would assume that it should be possible through a firmware modification to give the same capabilities to Telebit modems. Is it possible to allow even 9600bps FAX throughput through such a tweak? Would it be possible to emulate other protocols as well (USR HST, for example)? Is this even possible at all, or merely the vain dreams of a Telebit enthusiast? Is there a 'programmers' guide available for Tbit modems dealing with the insides of the modem (not how to send 'AT' commands to it :-) Any help on this will be appreciated, so thank you all, especially if you are from Telebit in replying. I would guess that it is quite possible. It's too bad Telebit hasn't done it, I'd buy one of their modems if they did. -- Jon Zeeff (NIC handle JZ) zeeff@b-tech.ann-arbor.mi.us
