[comp.dcom.modems] Data Rate Detection: Summary

halco@iccgcc.decnet.ab.com (10/27/90)

A while back I posted a request for information regarding bullet-proof
data rate detection for incoming calls. I received 5 replies with overlapping
information, to wit:

1) For Hayes-compatible modems, the "CONNECT xx00" message *can* be depended
on. Setting the modem to send numeric codes rather than test messages can
simplify the software some.

2) Alternatively, require the caller to repeatedly hit a key (usually CR).
Cycle through valid baud rates until the character is received without
framing or parity errors.

3) When using error-correcting modems, use the highest speed the modem will
accept and use flow-control to throttle communications.

Thanks to all who replied for the help.
