[comp.dcom.modems] Whodunit problem with DOS, BNU, DSZ and 16550

otto@tukki.jyu.fi (Otto J. Makela) (10/29/90)

I recently got a 16550 chip for my standard serial card as a replacement for
the ancient 8250, as a first step for going to a USRobotics HST/DS modem.

Everything seemed to work fine, except after Waffle file transfers with DSZ
the character output gets messed up, as if some critter had decided I wanted
7-bit mode. It is however NOT valid 7-bit data either. There simply are too
many parameters here... Waffle, BNU, DSZ, 16550... whodunit ?

I've switched back to the 8250 and everything is OK again, but I'd like to
get this to work. I can't believe no-one has run against this before ?

Cast of characters:
-------------------
Generic (=self-assembled) 386 with MS-DOS 4.01, 4M of memory, 177M IDE hd
Dumb serial card with COM1 and non-standard COM3 (currently 8250 UARTs)
Hayes-compatible SmartLink 2400S external modem (no MNP, nothing fancy)
Waffle DOS version 1.63, with BNU Fossil driver 1.70
Registered DSZ dated 062690 (latest? I think so)

DSZ commands in _send file:
---------------------------
C /command="C:\USR\BIN\DSZ port %d sx -s %i"
E /command="C:\USR\BIN\DSZ port %d sz -seP %i"
G /command="C:\USR\BIN\DSZ port %d sb -s %i"
X /command="C:\USR\BIN\DSZ port %d sx -s %i"
Y /command="C:\USR\BIN\DSZ port %d sb -sk %i"
Z /command="C:\USR\BIN\DSZ port %d sz -sm %i"
