I don't know anything about >= 9600 bps modems, but I'd like to; I'm thinking about getting one. What do the different modems do? What different standards exist? What is required for various applications? (I'd like to use >= 9600 bps for interactive use, and also for file transfers. The operating system on the local end will be either DOS or Unix, and the remote OS will surely be Unix.) Please post a FAQ if one exists. If none exists yet, could a guru please draft one?
