I'll be installing an analog leased line to connect two sites across town with SLIP. I'd like to get recommendations for not-too-expensive modems to purchase for this application. 9.6KB at least, but I'd like to get faster if possible. The impression I get from reading the literature is that there are some high-end units which can run at 14.4kb or 19.2kb without using any kind of compression, and then there are 9.6kb modems which derive their higher data rates from compressing the byte stream. I'd like something which I can just plug in and forget.
