[comp.dcom.modems] Known problem with Prometheus ProModems?

alexis@panix.uucp (Alexis Rosen) (11/12/90)

I have four Prometheus Promodem 2400G modems. They all suffer from a known
problem, which is that when dialing pulse they die until powered off.

Fine. They'll fix them free of charge. No complaints there. But-

A friend also tells me that some of them are known to be deficient, while
other are fine. Apparently some chip (?) has either the word "globe" or a
picture of a globe on it, if the modem's good, and not if it's bad.

Does anyone have any idea what he's talking about? These things are giving
me a lot of grief that has nothing to do with the dial problem. For example,
right now one of them is holding a line open, spitting wierd tones down it.
The fact that I've dropped DTR and the modem is supposed to reset on that
condition, but it hasn't, isn't improving my mood... :-(

Thanks in advance,

I once owned a Promodem 1200G (back in the days before everybody and his
brother had a 2400), and it had a bad habit of overheating and answering
without a carrier (not a good modem for a BBS with long distance network
contacts!). I'm told that the problem was addressed years ago, perhaps by
putting the power supply outside the case.

Otherwise, I was happy with the Prometheus product... but that one flaw was
major enough to force me to return the modem. I replaced it with a GVC product
that had less drastic, though equally significant problems (it didn't always
obey DTR correctly, and its carrier modulation wasn't as good as some other
designs'). I've seen newer GVC modems and they've improved noticeably.
