[comp.dcom.modems] RS-232 monitoring software

gordon@vaxeline.COM (Gordon Lee) (11/21/90)

Can anyone recommend a software package that allows you to monitor
an RS-232 line ? I am looking for something which runs on an IBM-PC.

Greenleaf Software Inc., 16479 Dallas Parkway, Bent Tree Tower Two,

publishes a product called "Viewcomm", which is a Serial Line Data
Analyzer program for IBM-type machines. There are too many features
to list, but it appears to be comparable to some well-equipped
commercial data line monitors. The list price is $ 495, though you
can undoubtedly get a discounted copy somewhere.

One of the best packages out there is the LM1 from Progressive computing.

This package includes a board which plugs into your system and the
software to control the board. There are two versions available
the basic LM1 and an LM1OE. The OE includes an 80186 co-processor on
the board and can sample data at speeds up to 72kb or so. Data byte
and RS232 signal events are logged with a .1 millisec time stamp (although
the accuracy is limited to .5 milisecs).

The basic software package provides for capturing and reviewing
async and sync data. Several add-on packages for decoding higher
level protcols are available and a C library package for reading
the data files and/or controling the capture board are available.

We started with the LM1 and upgraded to the LM1OE when it first
came out. Both cards performed flawlessly. We have written our own
SNA decode module to process LU6.2 packets.

If you need contact info, send me email (I have the number at the
office).

NOTE: I have nothing to do with Progressive other than being
a satisfied customer.

Check out the shareware program COMHELP. I understand that it lets
you passively monitor a COM port, and that it is designed to help
you diagnose RS-232 troules.

Sorry, this is based on hearsay. I don't yet have a copy, but when
I find one, I intend to give it a try.

The FELINE RS-232 protocol analyzer is for IBM systems with an
outboard RS-232 break-out box/monitoring pod and DOS software.
It did everything I needed it to do, except decode SLIP/CSLIP/PPP
packets and MIDI. These are still on my wish list...

The FELINE monitor is available from Fredrick Engineering in Rockville
Maryland.

Hope this helps...

Dave Dunfield wrote a package for the IBM-PC that uses the receive side of
two serial ports to form a passive RS-232 line monitor (requires that you make
the cable to connect the serial ports to your line under test). E-mail me
if you are interested (use the addresses found in my signature, not the one
in the header of this message).
