I'm looking for a high speed modem. Something which does V.32/V.42/V.42bis.
The Practical Peripherals 9600SA is attractive because of the low price.
Computer Discount Warehouse (1-800-326-4CDW) says that they don't have them
yet, maybe in a week-10 days. Telemart (1-800-622-6659) is also out of
stock, but they say they won't have them for a couple of weeks.
Since I see that some of the readers here have them, I'd like to ask for
phone numbers of the places where you bought them and how much you paid.
I'm willing to pay up to $500.
Other than that, are there any other V.32/V.42/V.42bis modems out there
going for less than $500?
I am planning to buy in the next week or two, so I need something which
is available now.
Another question (comp.dcom.fax hasn't shown up here yet; bear with me):
Are there any V.32/V.42/V.42bis modems which also sport send/receive
fax at 9600/4800. I guess I should be looking for V.29 capability, right?
I note that in a chart of modems recently posted in alt.bbs that only
one comes close, the DataRace 9600. It has V.32 and V.29, but no
error or compression. I am going to be buying a fax card too, but if
there is a high speed modem with this built in, I'd buy it instead. I'd
be willing to pay up to $700 (preferrably $600 or lower though) for such
a modem, since fax cards seem to be running $200. It should be EXTERNAL
though, as I need to use the modem on different machines.
If such a beast doesn't exist, how about recommendations of under $200
9600/4800bps send/receive fax cards or modems. This can and probably
should be internal for a PC. The software should support unattended
background operation, and preview for Hercules cards. Phone numbers of
places to order would be much appreciated. Again, I plan to buy in the
next week or two.
