[comp.dcom.modems] PP9600SA - Problem Followup

sysop@mixcom.UUCP (System Operator) (12/09/90)

Background:
----------
I have a 9600SA attached to an SCO UNIX system.
When attached to the Digiboard multiport serial
board, it will sometimes hold connections with calling
modems not using an error correcting protocol, but
more often it will immediately hang up the phone
after connecting. It will always accept and hold
connections if the calling modem is using V.42 or
MNP.

When connected to a com port, behavior improves.
The 9600SA will now accept and hold connections
with most calling modems most of the time.

Experiments
-----------
I connected a USR Dual Std. to the Digiboard and
called it using three modem brands, with and without
V.42 or MNP. It worked every time. Perfectly.
Conclusion: the Digiboard works fine. It works
with the other modems attached to it, too.

I disabled getty on the 9600SA line and connected
to the tty port (and modem)
via cu, then called the 9600SA using a PP 2400
that had *never* been able to hold a connection with
the 9600SA. It worked. Conclusion: PP 2400 and
9600SA *do* work together when the 9600SA is not talking
to a getty. The PP 2400 and 9600SA never hold a connection
in any other configuration (9600SA connected to com port
or Digiboard).

Conclusions
-----------
The Digiboard works OK. It works with the other
5 modems attached to it, including a USR Dual Std.

All of the modems work, including the PP 2400 that
always gets hung up on by the 9600SA.

Questions
---------
Why does the 9600SA hang up the line immediately
after connecting with the calling modem? If
every component is working, why isn't *IF* the
calling modem in not using an error correcting
protocol?

Why won't the 9600SA hold a connection with the PP2400
whenever the 9600SA is attached to the UNIX computer and
talking to a getty, but will hold the connection
if some other process is attached to the tty port?

Why doesn't the 9600SA work everytime when any other
modem tried thus far (Cardinal 2400, Telebit Trailblazer+,
PP2400, no-name2400, USR Dual Std.) works when answering
calls?

P.S. The modem configuration is below.
