[comp.dcom.modems] My T1000 doesn't work at 2400

venta@otello.sublink.org (Paolo Ventafridda) (12/09/90)

I have a Telebit T1000 which suffers of a very bad problem. Time ago
after a storm i found it with all of its leds on (sigh); since then,
i have the following problems:
- attempting to connect at 2400 with or without MNP fails 99% of times.
- attempting to connect at 2400 with another Telebit WORKS 50% of times,
but seldom uses MNP (level 4) error correction.
- attempting to connect at 1200 with a modem supporting MNP FAILS unless
  i force S50=2 S51=1 S66=1 S95=0.

Although i force "no mnp", the t1000 sometimes links at 2400/1200 mnp
and starts giving out garbage, finally drops the line. Sometimes it
gets the line for a few seconds, then hangs up.
The *funny thing: 80% of times, users calling me at 2400 LINK UP!
They get the connection with or without mnp, no matter of the modem
they are using!

The modem works fine at 9600 PEP, and also at 1200 (sometimes -very few-
with mnp!), but i gave up trying 2400 since months. The t1000 is release
1, i.e. the one without mnp-5 and timeout control.
The diagnostics, all of at&tx tests, reports Ok, no errors.
I also changed the power supply. I did a cold reset at least twice, without
any improvements.
I remind that time before the damn storm, i used to play with undocumented
registers, entering the 'monitor state'.
My questions:
- anyone else suffered of such problems?
- did telebit warn about using undocumented registers?
- what the hell is going on internally? i can't believe it passes all
  diagnostics everytime!
- what can a lighten do realistically in such cases? I thought that either
it freezes the whole stuff or does nothing. Such situation is
*so *frustrating to me, i love this modem...
- how is it possible that users can call me 2400 and i can't do it?

Any help or suggestion will be appreciated!
Many thanks, Paolo

I once had a similar problem show up with a T1000 at a customer site. We
were able to solve it with firmware. Send mail to modems@telebit.com
({uunet,sun.ames.pyramid}!telebit!modems) for tech support. You are
either suffering from a Power supply, Automatic Gain Control (AGC), or
V.22bis (2400) DSP emulation problem. Tech support will know of all
these and any possible solutions. Good Luck!
