[comp.dcom.modems] Hayes Ultra 96 Connection Failure

salc@aristotle.shearson.com (Sal Cataudella) (01/04/91)

I have a Hayes Ultra 96 modem connected to a NeXT cube, running kermit.
I cannot connect to ANY modem at speeds greater than 2400 baud. I even tried
the Hayes bulletin board and had problems with that. The symptoms are either a
quick loss of carrier, with the message 'NO CARRIER', a connection is made
and then the modem just 'hangs'. I have tried several sites known to have
Hayes Ultra 96 modems, and could only connect at 2400. The problem is even
worse if I try to connect to a Telebit TrailBlazer modem. Although I can
connect to the Telebit using a Hayes compatible modem (ViVa) at 2400 baud,
for the life of me, I can't get the Ultra to successfully connect at any speed!
Is there anyone out there that has experienced the same problem(s) with an Ultra?
And found a solution? Could it be the serial cable (is a special cable needed for
the Ultra) ? Kermit? the NeXT cube?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I tried to mail this, but it bounced.

In article <SALC.91Jan3133905@aristotle.shearson.com> you write:
>I seem to be having the same problem too with my Hayes Ultra 9600 modem.
>When I dial up to my unix host, (which has a Telebit TrailBlazer) a connection

I would expect you to have a problem with a V.32 connecting to a Trailblazer,
the later is NOT a V.32 modem. It's highspeed mode is a Telebit proprietary
protocol called PEP. Telebit also sells the T2500 which supports both V.32
and PEP, and the T1700 (I believe) which is V.32, but not PEP. You should
be able to connect at 2400.

Thanks for your response though; It appears my problem is that my modem is
NOT an Hayes Ultra, only a V-Series 9600 and is therefore not a true V.32 modem.
