[comp.dcom.modems] what happened to AVATEX?

SJS132@psuvm.psu.edu (02/03/91)

First, Thanks to All who replied about the problem with my old
Avatex 1200Hc... It turned out to just be the one relay on the
On/off hook line... I shorted out the relay a few times with the
modem on, and on line, (By this, I mean I used a jumper to open
and close the contacts of the relay... not really SHORTING it, but
operating it...) Anyways, First it didnt want to open/close...
was always open... then, after repeting it over and over, I finally
got it to open and close... it was slow at first, but great now!
I guess it was just frozen in the open position... It did look like the
solder points were blackend a bit, so I'm sure it was caused by some
type of voltage spike! I now Have a line protector on ALL of my phone
lines!

Two... What EVer became of AVATEX? I loved my Avatex 1200HC... And
when I did go to upgrade to a 2400, I couldn't even find the AVATEX
name in the computer shopper listing of modems! Did they just sink
like Atlantis? gone from the world, just like that? seems ashame...
I used my AVATEX for 2 Years with no prob, till that voltage spike
stuff, and now that I got it back up to par, It still works Great!
well, Any info as to their demise, will greatly be appriciated!
 -Steve

Ps... The New 2400 is doing fine.. Its MXE-2400, Made by a comp called
CALPAK... Works great, my modem software tells me its a 100% Hayes
modem... Compared to the Avatex 1200Hc, that it reported as a
"Generic Modem" ... Only thing, is the company that sells it and provides
for the Doc's, TOTALLY Left out what the 4 Dip Switches are for...
anyone konw... Seems its not to set the modem defaults, I do that with
software, and then save it to its Non-Viol. Memory, to load at power up!
Nifty.... and I can even jump back to the factory settings, if all
goes bad!

I am using 2 Avatex 2400E modems right now. Purchased 1 from Midwest
Micro (the people with ALL those ad pages in the Computer Shopper) and 1
from Computer Whiz in Bellevue, Washington. It works great. I know they
had 2400 Synch/Async as well as a 9600. But you are right, I haven't
seen much about them since Megatronics in Utah seems to have disappeared
(where I bought my original 1200E). I am another Avatex fan.
