gray@s5000.RSVL.UNISYS.COM (Bill Gray x2128) (02/12/91)
I am a complete novice WRT modems and computer/telecom interfaces;
if this is posted to the wrong newsgroup, please accept my profuse
apologies.
I work with a local group that is considering using a 900 number to
disseminate information. The carriers charge *much* more if you
need them to provide the hardware that handles the call. In other
words, if my computer can:
1.) Provide digitized voice output to the phone
2.) Branch to different messages depending on caller DTMF
sequences
3.) Digitize and store incoming voice
I can offer the service much more economically than if the carrier
provides those services.
I know that there are voice digitizers out there. I do not know what
I use to connect the computer to the phone line. I imagine that a
regular modem is not the right choice--no need to modulate or demodulate
incoming/outgoing voice or incoming DTMF. But what *do* I use?
Are there any modems that have operation modes that suppress carrier
and otherwise do as I need?
Any ideas or pointers gratefully received. If this is the right group,
I'd be happy to summarize and post e-mail responses.
Thanks in adavance,
Bill
