I recently installed a V.32 modem with V.42bis on my PC BBS. One of my callers recently ask an interesting question that I couldn't answer. He asked how he could tell whether his V.42bis modem and mine actually established a V.42bis connection or just a V.42 (no bis) connection. My guess is that a V.42 connection will generate the result code: 'CONNECT 9600-LAPM' (this may not be the exact format of that message) while a V.42bis connection will generate: 'CONNECT 9600-LAPM-COMP' ie. the difference is the 'COMP' in the result message. Is this true - is the difference between V.42bis and non bis the presence or absense of the data compression capability? Would two V.42bis modems ever connect 'MNP-COMP' instead of 'LAPM-COMP'? Thanks.
