[comp.dcom.modems] Inexpensive V32bis Modems?

ghost@bucsf.bu.edu (Jay Adelson) (02/22/91)

The quest hast begun...

Anybody know who produces v32bis modems (that support v32, v42, v42bis,
and other slower protocols) and how much they run for?

I'm looking for the best deal now.

    -Jay

Don't expect it to happen until an ASIC house like Rockwell updates
their V.32 chipset for V.32bis. That's what most of the cheap V.32
modems are based upon. V.32bis is even more challenging for a hardware
designer, so expect the cheapies to buy commodity items and package
them in several months.

To the best of my knowledge, the only companies presently shipping
V.32bis modems are USRobotics, Digicom, Penril, Codex, Forval, and
Prometheus. I'm not sure of the pricing, but I think the USR is
around $1200, Digicom $1000, Penril $1400, Codex $1200, Forval $800,
and Prometheus $800; all list prices. They all support V.42,
V.42bis, and the lower speeds. Many other companies are going to be
shipping soon; the voting on V.32bis closed today, and I'm waiting
to hear the results.

The USR V.32bis can also be bought for about 600$ by mail-order.
