[comp.dcom.modems] No hang-ups

elliston@central.cis.upenn.edu (David Elliston) (02/26/91)

I plan to set up an X-terminal in my home connected by a pair of
high-speed modems. Because initialization takes about 20 minutes over
a phone link, I would be crushed if my modems dropped the line often, so
I'm looking for a Mean Time Between Hang-ups of at least ten days.
Past experience indicates the line is fairly clean (I've held a 2400 bps
connection for over a week).

Does anyone have any recommendations for which v.32 modems hold their link
most reliably and which don't? Is v.32bis more reliable?

I think asynchronous protocols are out of the question, because of the
nature of X-terminal connections.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
David Elliston

I think you might be happier with a leased line rather than dial-up. You are
asking for alot. In our area maintenance is done by the phone company in the
middle of the night and unless you tell them you will lose the connection once
in a while due to their routine maintenance. I would not assume you will be
able to stay on line for extreme long periods. If you do go with v-32 I would
configure the modems to tolerate periods of poor line quality so the connection
would not be dropped as is configured in some default configurations. Check
with your vendor for this information. You might have better luck with a PEP
telebit type modem but interactive performance might suffer. I have noticed thatPEP is more tolerant of poor line quality or long distance connections than v-32modems.

P.S. Its all magic anyway and your results may vary
