Floyd, thanks for the suggestions. They were right. Here's what was happening: SWBell sent a troubleshooter out and she determined that there was a short - not in the modem or in the lines running to the modem, but in the Y/BK leads of ANOTHER USR V.32bis that my roommate has in his room. His RJ13 was wired so that his data line was connected to the red/green pair and my modem line was connected to his yellow/black pair. Since the V.32bis Dual Standard no longer supports A/A1 signaling, the modem had a partial short on the second pair and was shorting my line. We disconnected my data line from the yellow/black pair and the RING problem disappeared. Thanks for your suggestions. Mark Williams williams@gamma.is.tcu.edu
