We have just connected a VAX 750 running 4.2 bsd to a DEC terminal server V2.0. Since we don't have the LAT protocol interface software for Unix we can't connect directly from the server and have set up remote-access ports from the server to the Vax. We would appreciate answers to the following questions. * Are there any other sites running this configuration? * Has anybody developed LAT-protocol software that would allow this connection to be made over the Ethernet? If so, can we get it? A loosely related question: Is there a simple way to get the lack-of-processing effect of RAW mode but with only a 7-bit data path? CBREAK mode is obviously no good for this because of needing to catch and map all the special interrupt characters. Perhaps someone has come up with an IOCTL for 7-bit RAW? From: "Neville D. Newman" <NEVILLE%umass-cs.csnet@CSNET-RELAY.ARPA> We would appreciate answers to the following questions. * Has anybody developed LAT-protocol software that would allow this connection to be made over the Ethernet? If so, can we get it? Over two years ago, I tried to get the LAT spec out of DEC in order to do a public-domain implementation for 4.2. I never succeeded. Seems the author was interested in trying to patent the idea, then they were going to try to develop some sort of standard from it, then who knows what. But the bottom line was that it wasn't going to leave DEC. In theory, Ultrix has/will have a server end, but I don't know if it has ever been released. Or what you do if you don't want to run Ultrix. Unfortunately, the protocol isn't as useful as it could be anyway, since it's limited to working on a single ethernet, but that's an entirely different discussion. They're out there, they're probably getting cheaper, and there doesn't seem to be any way to make them work with 4.2. Cheers, chris ----------

It sounds like you have made your purchase of a LAT, but I think I would have first looked into the Bridge equivalents which run Telnet (and TCP/IP), the client software is available for all DEC O/S's and you would have been able to talk to a whole variety of systems. Now the best you can hope for is LAT support under Ultrix (which may exist.) -Barry Shein, Boston University

One thing that I forgot to mention yesterday about the DEC Ultrix LAT system (a real gotcha) is that if you only have Ultrix systems on your Ethernet, forget it! You need a VMS or other DECNET-capable (non-Ultrix) system to download software into the terminal server. This deficiency is, of course, one of the things DEC is working on. But don't go running out to buy a terminal server just 'cause you have Ultrix 1.1, *unless* you have VMS, etc. now. Dick Dramstad rad@mitre-bedford.arpa

No problem if you have a VMS system on your lan as well, but you'll have to do something extra if you really want pure Ultrix support. -- Regards, Andrew Macpherson. <andrew@stc.UUCP> {aivru,creed,datlog,iclbra,iclkid,idec,inset,root44,stl,ukc}!stc!andrew

There is LAT support under Ultrix and it works quite well. Ricky Palmer DEC - Ultrix Group
