[comp.dcom.modems] Which chipset is best for V.32/V.42bis?

mo@well.sf.ca.us (Maurice Weitman) (03/03/91)

It seems that 9600 modems are becoming more of a commodity these
days, and that brings me around to trying to evaluate some of the
more generic brands.

Which chipset do you think is the best at the moment? Is
Rockwell still well thought of? Are there other things to look
for?

| Is Rockwell still well thought of?

In my very scanty review of the issue, the answer is ``no''. The
Rockwell board is not well thought of. It just doesn't seem to perform
well under impaired line conditions. I've also heard that they have a
big quality control problem ...

| Are there other things to look for?

Yes. Test the modems under your real world usage conditions. If you
can, test it out connecting withing your local exchange and from nearby
exchanges minimally. You can usually get distributors and manufactureers
to lend you modems for a couple of weeks for your testing if you're going
to buy a fair number of them. Other than that, your best bet is to post
questions about specific modems to this group.
