[comp.dcom.modems] Forming a Global BBS List.

Marc_North@mindlink.UUCP (Marc North) (03/07/91)

THIS MESSAGE IS TO EVERYONE WHO CALLS BBS's.

I am forming a global list of BBS's. All computer types, all countries,
EVERYTHING.
Please e-mail your list of BBS's that you call. All I ask is that you
be reasonably sure that the ones you list are still active. Where possible
include modem speed range, city, state/province, country, and of course the
BBS's name and phone number (WITH area code!)

I am doing this as a project, and any final list will be available via
FTP in the near future.

Reach DEEP into the BBS well, pull out the obscure, the strange, the
oddballs as well as the slick mainstream ones. Don't worry about being
repetitive, I'll weed out the duplicate submissions. Please be accurate.

        Thank you very much,
                        Marc North

   Please DON'T.

You are taking on a task which, if you were to perform it well (and
responsibly) would both occupy *all* of your time and cost you thousands of
dollars a month.

I used to run a BBS in Toronto, but moved it in August of 1987. I know the
people who, several months later, got that old phone number and, to this day,
they are receiving modem calls. I couldn't figure out why until I started
stumbling accross "authoritative" BBS lists published as recently as last
summer giving that number as an active BBS!

BBSes come and go, they move, and you can't possibly keep track of all of
the systems you're going to list. Misprints happen. I sincerely doubt
that you have any idea of the scope of your project, and you have not stopped
to think out carefully the the damage that a badly maintained list will do.

If you *must* continue, I suggest that you start with the FidoNet nodelist.
Updated weekly, it contains nearly 10,000 listings worldwide, most of which
are public access BBS systems.

   Geoff

P.S.: This probably belongs in alt.bbs, not comp.dcom.modems.

If you want a good listing, the Fidonet lists are fairly complete... They
are about 800k unpacked.

There is also the WWIV Net List that you can get from various WWIV Area
Coordinators. What this ceases to do, IMHO, is ignore all the great
non-netted BBSs (yes, there are plenty out there). I do believe FOG
(First Osborne Group) in Daly City, CA keeps a LARGE list of these kinds
of BBSs.

As for mine:

Lunatic Fringe (919) 571-7736 Raleigh, NC
Aladdin's Lamp (919) 460-0607 Cary, NC
Reel Class (919) 481-4300 Cary, NC
Babel (206) 363-8969 Seattle, Wash.
Hotel (916) 927-7680 Sacramento, Calif.

Not to mention the Citadel-86 Network. Not well known, but a good,
somewhat Anarchistic Net (not real formal). My BBS is a member of
CitNet, WWIV, & FIDO.

Sorry for use of bandwidth, but my mail to him bounces.
