[comp.dcom.modems] Question of novice.

Can anybody tell me, where can I find the COMPLETE description of compression
and error correction algorithms used in MNP lev.5. I have to include a software
implementation of this algorithms into my noncomercial product, but I can't
find them. Are they licensed to Microcom or can I get this description for
free? Where?

A definition of the error control scheme (MNP 2-4) is available in
Annex A of CCITT Recommendation V.42. You can also get
documentation from Microcom, for about US$100.

MNP5, however, involves patents held by Microcom. You must contact
Microcom for information on licensing these patents, even if you
could get documentation (and they're really the only source for
that, anyway). The contact is:

MNP is copyrighted by Microcom. If I remember correctly, they want
about $200 for the error handling protocols and much more for MNP5. This
may have changed, since V.42. The CCITT often looks down on standards
which are built around proprietary protocols. I think it has something
to do with giving the owner of the copyright an unfair advantage. Although,
they would probably claim that $200 really is not that unfair.
I know that when the CCITT was looking at a v.42bis compression
standard, Microcom was pushing MNP7. At that time, they were offering
a "C" implementation of MNP7 that could be run on a PC. This was to
be used to compare compression results of MNP7 and the other compression
algorithms being proposed. They may have similar programs to demo MNP5.
