Its a shame that all the MNP PC implementations are embedded in terminal emulation programs. What would be more useful would be MNP done as a driver, with maybe a dialing application to setup the driver and make the connection. That way you could use whatever serial progam you liked. Thinking out loud, maybe the problem is that PC programs are written to go right at the UART for performance, and wouldn't use the driver anyway. Maybe I should be more surprised that someone hasn't done an MNP driver or streams module for Unix. Regardless of performance there are times when the error correction would be a blessing.
