[comp.dcom.modems] Software mnp5 for a pc

Its a shame that all the MNP PC implementations are embedded in terminal
emulation programs. What would be more useful would be MNP done as a
driver, with maybe a dialing application to setup the driver and make
the connection. That way you could use whatever serial progam you liked.

Thinking out loud, maybe the problem is that PC programs are written to
go right at the UART for performance, and wouldn't use the driver anyway.

Maybe I should be more surprised that someone hasn't done an MNP driver
or streams module for Unix. Regardless of performance there are times
when the error correction would be a blessing. I guess MNP modems are
just too cheap to make it worth the trouble on more expensive systems.
