I am currently working on a project whereby data communications between two computers is accomplished through the ocean. One computer is on a ship and the other is on an underwater robotic submersible. The ocean makes a lousy acoustic channel for high speed (>4800 bps) throughput due to ambient noise, reverberation, multipath, and doppler shifting. What I am looking for is direction on what kind of modems are available today and/or what modem technology is able to do today. I don't know much about modems, but I thought some of these issues may be addressed in the radio/cellular modem arenas. The present acoustic data communications link uses a Rockwell R24 (2400/1200 bps) modem vintage 1980. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better modem replacement?
