I have AT&T 620 and 730 terminals connected to Multitech Multimodem v.32 modems (also capable of v.42). I cannot get these to run layers (xt) on our system V R 3.2.2/3.2.3 386's. I've got them communicating at 9600 baud, set for xon/xoff on the terminal end, RTS/CTS on the computer end, and connected to device nodes which supposedly support hardware flow control; I can get into layers, but can't create more than one layer without locking up. Does anyone know or can they suggest the proper settings for flow control, etc. to get layers to work?

Layers on Modems et-al. First, if you can arange it so that you don't do Xon/off flow control anyware on the circuit you will be much happier. If your modem is eating the characters many of the layers control packets can acutally stop the modem transmitions. You hang. If you can't get rid of Xon/off then use the setup option "Encoding On" (Which I have on my 630, and understand to be standard(tm) to all layering devices, but your mileage may vary) so that all of the control characters are encoded for transmission within the printable character set (al la kermit). This setting should make many of your problems go away. (Note, only the setting inside the terminal is necessary. there is noplace else it occurs. The host system gets the options from the terminal durring protocol initalization. It is a connection-by-connection deal,) -- Robert C.
