[comp.dcom.modems] radio modems?

richard@islenet.UUCP (Richard Foulk) (06/21/87)

I just read that a company called Dataradio Corp. (Atlanta) recently
introduced a "wireless modem capable of transmitting data over radio
channels at as much as 9600 bits per second."

Has anyone heard of Dataradio or this modem? Or any other radio
modem that will go that fast?

thanks

Does anybody know of any low-power, low-bandwidth radio modem (i.e., no wires)
for short-distance (less than 1/2 mile or so) digital communication? Or
components to build one? (The interface does not have to be RS232).

Thanks

I have a brochure from California Microwave (408-732-4000/415-968-7000)
for their RadioLink Spread Spectrum Microwave Data Terminal. The
specs listed:

Range: outdoors line of sight: 5 miles
	       inside office building: 800 feet
inside dense office building: 500 feet

	Transmit Power: 1 watt

Price: $3500 per end (or $7000 per pair)

	Speed: 250 Kbs, half duplex

	Intefaces: RS-232, RS-485, V.35, X.212bis, IEEE 802.3, Appletalk

RF frequency: 902-928 MHz, 2400-2483.5 MHz

	FCC License required: None

I've not actually used this box -- I saw it at COMNET a few months back.
They also claim to have a model with a mux built in so that you can
run 8 low speed users over the link. They said this box (Radio modem
+ Mux) was $4500 per end ($9000 per pair).

There are also other vendors with lower speed boxes, and for
some applications with optical line of sight you can use laser
modems (some of these support up to Ethernet sppeds).
