[comp.dcom.modems] Info needed for Secure Modem Management Systems

MATHAIM@VTVM1.CC.VT.EDU (Mathew Mathai) (04/17/91)

We currently have an inbound pool of 48, NEC I2432DF modems housed in a
NEC I1000 Intelligent Rack system. Users call the number associated with
the modem pool and are connected to an IBM/ROLM 9751 CBX. Our host
computers are connected to the CBX. This is how off-campus users access
our host systems. At this point we do not perform any authentication
(i.e. anybody can dial into the modem pool and connect to the CBX)

We would like to start authenticating users. This is being done partly
because we would like to charge users and recover the cost of
maintaining the modem pool and the associated hardware.

We are looking for a system that does the following:
1.Authenticate users using passwords (or similar mechanisms)
2.Disallow multiple simultaneous logins of one userid (i.e. if user1
with password1 logs into the system, no one else can log into the
system with the same userid/password pair). This allows us to charge
a flat fee instead of getting into the complications of connect time
based billing (which we don't want to get into right now !)

The following features would be HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
  a. Secure Token Cards (challenge-response or time based)
  b. Limit access to ports based on userids or passwords.
  c. Allowed us to set time and date of userid expiration
  d. Maintained easy to follow logs of system activity that could be
easily downloaded to a PC fo archival purposes
  e. Kept track of userids added/deleted/modified per day for accounting
     purposes.

We're currently examining these two systems to assess suitabilty for our
needs:
      Security Dynamics ACM-1600
      Digital Pathways ICAN system

If any body in netland knows of any systems other than these two systems
mentioned above, please send e-mail DIRECTLY TO ME. I'll take anything:
names, phone numbers, sales pitches etc. etc.
