I have two Telebit T1600 modem and I want to connect two Sun
workstations (Sparc 2 and 3/50) with these modem throught SLIP. How
can I initialize those modem?
Thanks for your help.

The key to making the T1600 (or any other modem for that matter) work with SLIP is to ensure that the modems provide a completely transparent path for the data (that means no in-band flow control like XON/XOFF). Also, if you want to take advantage of the performance improvement offered by V42bis data compression you will need some sort of flow control. I recommend hardware flow control (RTS used by the workstation to throttle the flow of data from the modem and CTS used by the modem to throttle the flow of data from the workstation). The easiest way to setup the T1600 to do this is to use one of the prestored configurations. I suggest the following command: AT&F9 This enables RTS/CTS flow control. It also sets up the modem to hold DSR high, DCD indicates the status of the received carrier, and dropping DTR will terminate the link. Make sure that the SLIP you are running on your Suns supports hardware flow control and that the implementation will support high data rates (you will want to run the interface between the workstation and the modem at 38,400 bps if your workstation can support that data rate without dropping characters). -- Brian Lloyd, WB6RQN Telebit Corporation Network Systems Architect 1315 Chesapeake Terrace brian@napa.telebit.com Sunnyvale, CA 94089-1100 voice (408) 745-3103 FAX (408) 734-3333
