Recently I've seen several advertisment for V.32bis/V.42bis modems from forval for a rather decent (at least the educational) price. These modems allow remote update of the modem software itself by a simple phone call (Thus obviating the need for the constant chip-swapping which seem to be the bane of the owners of highspeed modems by other companies). While I don't read every article in this group, I don't think there has been any mention of them here yet. Does anyone have one of these ? How good are they ? How well do they communicate with high-speed modems of other manufacturers ? Could they be programmed to run one of the various proprietary protocolls ? My experience with Forval wasn't a pleasant one. They promised me the world and delivered nothing. They announced V.32bis well before anyone else (at least that I saw) in Data Communications magazine. I called them and they said the modems would be ready in a few weeks (this was last fall). I ordered a couple on evaluation and never got any. They also said they would have 19200/76800 baud support early 1991, but I haven't heard anything from them since last fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | Jacob M.
