[comp.dcom.modems] Another Telebit T-1600 Question

ptownson@delta.eecs.nwu.edu (Patrick A. Townson) (06/02/91)

The Telebit T-1600 also includes 'modem security'. Incoming callers
can be (according to register S46):

S46=0 Passed through to DTE, no security.

S46=1 Callback enabled. Caller inserts password, hangs up and
is called back a few seconds later at phone number
           stored in modem.

S46=2 Same as above, but when called back, caller has to insert
the password a second time to be connected.

S46=3 Caller has to insert password, but then is connected to
DTE directly, without having to be called back.

To change the contents of S46,

or to AT~N(n) [Store number in directory or change password associated
with it],

or to AT~L [List the numbers and passwords in the directory]

one must enter a password. The default password from the factory is
"PEP" (gee, I wonder why? ) ...

And we are told this system password (PEP) can itself be changed,
which is the way it should be ....

But if you forget what you changed the system password to, **how do
you recover it? **

Setting all factory defaults doesn't work, powering down the modem
does not work, etc ... nor would you want it to be that simple.

I've not changed the password yet, nor will I until I have a
fool-proof method of recovering it should I forget the new one ... and
anyway, I'm just not using callback at this time anyway.

I understand this modem (T-1600) is a fairly recent model, so if
anyone wants further information about it I'll be glad to type in more
of the manual as requested.

Perform a Power-On reset to the TTY configuration as described in
Chapter 3 of the manual. The reset procedure will reset the AT~U
password back to "PEP".

Some security-minded folks may say that isn't very secure, as anyone
could walk up to the modem, perform a reset, and then access the modem's
passwords at will. True enough, so physical access to the modem should
be restricted if your security needs are high.

Telebit never intended the security features as the be-all and end-all
of modem security. Just some simple measures to add security to devices
that otherwise would be completely unprotected (e.g. radio transmitter
equipment on a mountaintop).
