[comp.dcom.modems] RFI: Racal-Milgo RM-1822DS

roberson@aurs01.uucp (Charles "Chip" Roberson) (06/03/91)

I have an opportunity to buy a surplus Racal-Milgo RM-1822DS which,
apparently, is a repackaged Telebit. However, I'm not sure which
Telebit it is.

The Racal-Milgo documentation is dated June 1987.

The Telebit "Packetized Ensemble Protocol Modem" documentation is
dated:

	Firmware Release 3,	October 1987.

Here are my questions:

Does anybody know if this is just an exterior repackaging, or has
Racal-Milgo done anything special to the modem?

Specifically, which Telebit is this? It will do:

	 300 bps Bell 103
	1200 bps Bell 212A
	1200 bps V.22
	2400 bps V.22bis

I would imagine the Firmware has been updated since then. What does
it take to get it updated and can it be upgraded?

Who is Racal-Milgo? I've heard of Racal-Vadic (sp?) but not -Milgo.
If these guys still exist, are they known for their service or can
I just skip them and go to Telebit (who is somebody I know better)?

Finally, what is a fair market value for this modem?

Thanks,
 Chip

It's equivalent to a TrailBlazer. Not a TrailBlazer Plus, but the original
TrailBlazer.

That's good. Version AA3.01-AB3.00 (aka Version 3), was the last version
released for the original TrailBlazer. It would appear that this modem
has been upgraded at some time in the past.

Version 3 had the main characteristics of present-day Telebit modems.
Protocol Support, oodles of S-registers, MNP3 (and a bit of MNP4), and
PEP, though PEP Data Compression is not supported.

Nothing out of the ordinary about it, especially if it has the Ver 3
firmware chips installed. You can find out by entering the ATI3 command.

The highest firmware version is the AA3.01-AB3.00 I mentioned before.
There is a trade-in to a T2500 available, but the price may be more
than you might pay some of the mail-order sources for the same modem.
Check with Telebit tech support if you want to investigate that option.

Milgo is another division of Racal. I believe Vadic made lower speed
modems and Milgo made higher speed ones - at least for a while. (one
reason they OEM'ed the TB from Telebit) Modems aren't the only products
Milgo makes, but I don't know too much about them.
