Help! The dialup modem modem has died big time. It is a Packard Bell 2400 and for some reason the phone line goes off hook as soon as you plug it into the modem regardless of whether the modem is turned on or off :-((( any suggestions would be welcome. Anyways, I had a Ventel 2400 bps modem that I could use to replace it with fortunately. Unfortunately, it works in dial in mode only. My 3B2/400 will not talk to it at all -- cannot access device. Using my roommate's PC I tried setting it to assume carrier detect all the time like I had the old modem. I was assuming it was the standard problem of tracking carrier detect. On most hayes compatible modems you set &C0 and it works fine. Not on this one. AT&V doesn't do anything either, except give ERROR. Does anyone know the command set for the Ventel 2400 bps modems ? What are the commands to set it always assume their is a carrier and, for that matter, to tell you what the current settings are? This modem is really annoying. What more can I say? Does someone else out there have one of these? scott -- Scott J.M.
