[comp.dcom.modems] External modems for laptops

659olarte@gw.wmich.edu (06/10/91)

Those little external modems that are out in the market (mainly oriented for
laptop computers), do they have built-in speaker? or you have to 'guess' if
the comm program really connected to the modem and it is dialing.

Also , does anyone know prices, modems, dealers, and which one is better and
which one is worse.?

do they exist in 4800 and 9600bps too?

kike Thanx a lot

I've seen adverts for three. Does anybody have comments on quality
relative price etc. I'm particularly interested in those with MNP4/5
and/or v42bis.

THose I have seen are:

1. Hayes Pocket Edition. $179 (June BYTE 1991, p266). 2400 baud, no MNP
or FAX (despite a misleading advert. Ambigious as to whether it is
powered from the serial port or the phone line.

2. Stowaway Vocal. $295. 2400 -- does appear to have MNP or v42bis (p308).
Line powered.

3. Tech Power (a Taiwanese OEM) TP 96/24 SR. No price given. (International
section of BYTE). FAX, MNP and v42bis. Larger than the others (5" long).
Internal 9v battery.

4. Worldport modems. Internal 9v battery. Availible in 1200, 2400 and
MNP, FAX versions.
