[comp.dcom.modems] Zoom Telephonics v.32bis modem info?

oovvoo@mixcom.COM (Mike Shawaluk) (06/08/91)

Please excuse me if this has already been discussed recently, but I was
looking through the latest (June 25) issue of PC Magazine, and in an ad for
MicroWAREHOUSE (a mail-order place), they list the above modem at a price of
$455 (s/h is $7.00 Airborne Express, or $3.00 UPS ground). This seems like
an incredible price for a true v.32bis 9600 bps modem; does anyone know more
about it (i.e., seen a review, actually bought one, etc.?)

Oh, and if you want to order one from these folks, their toll-free order #
is (800) 367-7080, and the item # is MM0820.

Thanks in advance.

I saw this, too. This must be a typo. There is no such thing as a
v.32bis 9600 modem. (Also, there is also no such thing as a $455
v.32bis modem, but I wish there was).

They must have meant a v.32/v.42bis modem.

If this was a typo, then more than one company made it... Mac products USA is advertising a virtually identical ad for a v.32/v.42 9600 baud modem for about the same price.

As an additional followup to my original message, I called the dealer for the
ZOOM v.32bis Turbo, and obtained the phone number for Zoom Telephonics, whom I
then called to ask if it was v.32 or v.32bis. The person I spoke to assured
me that it was indeed v.32bis, that it was a brand new product, and that the
list price was $600, which would bear out a street price of $455.00. He also
indicated that the modem had a 2 year parts & labor warantee, and that they
offered a 30-day return policy, which he indicated that any authorized dealer
should support.

I'm seriously considering getting one & trying it out; if it truly works with
other v.32bis modems, it's certainly a great price/performance combination.

Isn't a v.32bis suppose to be faster than 9600 bps?
