[comp.dcom.modems] Hayes 2400 baud smartmodem

cumber@portia.Stanford.EDU (Gregory Cumber) (06/13/91)

this might seem trivial to some, but ive tried everything and
spent 6 months in "slow motion" .... ZZZZZZZ....

i have a hayes 2400 smartmodem, am connecting to 2400 baud lines
when i dial in, but CANT get anything but : CONNECT 1200.

im using a simple vt240 and have tried every permutation on its
  settings but to no avail.

is there some way to tell my hayes to use 2400 so that the little
red light under HS (high speed) comes on and my eyes dont fall
  asleep with the 1200 ?

Are you sure that your VT-240 is sending the dial command at 2400 bps? As
soon as a Hayes Smartmodem 2400 gets an "AT" command at 2400 bps, the HS
light comes on. If the command is issued at a lower speed, the HS indicator
switches off.

Do you have your terminal set to 2400? A Smartmodem 2400 sets the
maximum speed at which it will connect based on the speed at the you
are issuing "AT" commands.

Is the "HS" light on when you issue commands? I mean, is it on, and
then goes off when you get the CONNECT 1200? If so, this indicates
that the modem on the other end really only supports 1200. But if
the HS light is NEVER on, this means you aren't issuing commands to
the modem at 2400, so it will not connect at 2400.
