[net.records] Beefheart and Zappa

tugs (04/28/83)

Trout Mask Replica is still available as an import - I saw it as recently
as three months ago. Freak Out, Absolutely Free and We're Only In It For
The Money (as well as the legendary Lumpy Gravy and several others) are
all long out of print. They go for moderately stiff rates at used record
stores (about $20 Canadian ($16 US (sigh)) for Freak Out, $50 ($40) for
Lumpy Gravy), but there is another alternative...
In an interview with Musician magazine two months ago, Zappa announced that
in the very near future he's releasing five 7-record box sets (yes, 35 records).
It's basically a re-release of most of his older material. Each box is
6 old albums plus a new album of previously unreleased material from the
same period. But these aren't just reissues - they've all been remastered,
and in some cases remixed as well, and Zappa says the improvement in sound is
pretty phenomenal. In the case of Zappa/Mothers Fillmore '71, he says that
you won't even recognize it as the same album (but I liked that album a lot).
Anyway, this is supposedly gonna happen in May. Anybody got about $300 they
wanna blow?
