Suppose that at most 26 different monsters can appear on one level. And suppose we take the lower case characters for those on the first level. Then as we go down levels, we start seeing upper case lettered monsters, and we know they are different (and probably scarier) ones. * For every upper cased monster that appears, the lower cased one goes away * Now, if after another lot of levels, you suddenly see a lower case letter appear again, you know it's a new monster (and you know the corresponding upper cased monster won't appear any more from here on, and if you ever see one it will be an even more scary one). The only problem remains with polymorph, or create monster. There seem to be two easy possibilities: either tell (in a message) what sort of monster it is, or just don't create the "wrong" monsters. And people who take all sorts of tamed monsters with them deserve to get confused. (But there should be a command to ask the full name of a certain monster on the screen.) -- Biep.
