[comp.terminals] DEC WT/78

jailbait@c3pe.UUCP (R. "Jailbait" Segal) (07/29/88)

Ok, so, I was given one. It's neat. It has no docs or the like.
What I know is this. It's very close to a VT-52. It was designed for
word processing. The DEC Tech rep referred to it as their first Stand Alone.
The Ref Manual goes for $84. My VAX sysop at NYU has never heard of them.
Most people haven't. (I love obscure hardware - i just picked up 2 KSR 33
TTY's - :-)
Ok, what I would ask of you: Have any of you heard of these things? Do any
of you have one? What about manuals? What did the Tech rep mean by standalone?
Stuff like that.
I really like this - it's fun getting responses from DEC like "Well, no one
here would know about it because they weren't here when it was in production!"
Stuff like that.
Well, anyway. Thanks in advance for any info.
If you want, you can call me at work (10-7 or so) at (301) 890 1600.
Or at home (try around 11 pm) (301) 474 4890
Thanks again.
Jailbait.
Rich.

That's a DEC word processing workstation based on an Intersil chip.
It runs the PDP-8 instruction set, so there's a mountain of obsolete-
but-fascinating software available. It was the first "integrated"
PDP-8 system, but of course it was preceded by a lot of variations
on the '8.

The VT78 is, as far as I can tell, a PDP-8 cpu of some sort (the cmos chip?)
stuck into a vt52 with a floppy controller.

What I'd like to know is why my rx02-pa came with a db25 cable plugged into
the interface board. It would up under the top of the box and into a db25
on the back. The rx02-pa should just be a normal rx02 in a vertical box that
looks like a decmate I. The interface board seems to be the same, so I
just unplugged the berg<->db25 cable and stuck a berg<->berg cable in.
When my rx211 arrives I'll know..--
