[net.records] Pink Floyd "The Final Cut"

tconn (04/29/83)

Compared with "The Wall", I found the "Final Cut" boring and
repetitious. Every song sort of blended into th next cut. I know
this will be taken as quite slanderous by all Floyd fans, but
you can't write a Dark Side of the Moon every time out. Every
review I've read calls this a follow up to the Wall. The Wall
was extremely powerful musically. This is more low key - I don't
see any more correlation betwwen these 2 than Saucerful of Secrets
and Animals. Maybe its his writing style the critics are comparing,
but I'll take The Wall anyday over Final Cut. But then, you who like
it don't care anyway.

Yet another review of "The Final Cut":

To my way of thinking, either Pink Floyd s ahead of their time
or I am behind it. Whenever I buy the latest Pink Floyd album,
it's at about that time that I start to appreciate their previous
album. I didn't reall like "Wish you were Here" until "Animals"
came out, I didn't really get into "Animals" until "The Wall"
	was released.

I own "The Wall", but I'm still not that crazy about it. I like
certain sections, but I don't think I've ever played the whole
	thing through more than once.

I hoped, in a bizarre sort of way, that the release of "The Final
Cut" would mean that I would listen to "The Wall" and wonder why I
hadn't liked it all along. I hope I'm not the only one that
STILL doesn't like "The Wall". I still find it pretentious
and overdone. Too theatrical. (which must have been great in concert.)

As has been noted before, "The Final Cut" is much more low-key.
And I find that a tremendous improvement over "The Wall" - the
emotion and power of the music remain, with a sense of restraint
that makes it more listenable. It's the only Pink Floyd album
I have liked on the first listening since "Dark Side of the Moon".

Well, I guess if you're a true Floyd fan, you own this new disk
already. If you're not a true Floyd fan, but like some of their
stuff, I recommend this album highly.

(As always, I say: Don't buy it until you've heard it, and after
you've heard it, don't pay attention to what anyone else says.
	 I'ts YOUR opinion that counts.)
