[comp.terminals] VT100 vs. VT200 emulation

todd@stiatl.UUCP (Todd Merriman) (01/13/89)

The main difference between the VT100 and VT220 is the number of function
keys: the VT100 has about 8, and the VT220 about 30. All VMS software makes
use of the VT220 function keys (it helps to sell more of their terminals).
Consequently, VT100 terminal emulators are at a major disadvantage on VMS
systems. There are many other features that the VT220 has (such as foreign
character sets) that the VT100 does not, but these are rarely used, anyway.
Both the VT100 and the VT220 have a 132 column mode.

Incidently, the VT220 is now "obsolete". DEC's current standard terminal
is the VT320.
