[comp.terminals] VT220 vs VT100 emulation

zaphod@madnix.UUCP (Ron Bean) (01/12/89)

I've noticed that the more recent "VT100" emulation programs
are really VT220 emulators. Could someone describe the
differences between the VT100 and VT220, and why I would want to
emulate one rather than the other? Also, how can I get a VT220
tech manual?

I'm not sure that I can list all the differences, but here are
some major ones:

- character insert/delete
- line insert/delete
- downloadable fonts
- function keys (f6-f20)

If you could, you would want to emulate the vt220. At dialup
speeds it stinks when you have to wait while the vt100 redraws
the whole screen just because you deleted one blank line.

Some terminal emulation pgms implement VT102 emulation, which as far
as I know is vt100 with the char/line insert/delete.
