Hi. Anybody knows of a way to query an HP 2392A terminal for a
response? I'm trying to get 'qterm' to recognize the terminal, but the
terminal doesn't respond to <Esc>Z nor <Esc>c. I called local HP technical
support, and got referred to our Computing Center (since there was somebody
who supposedly handles all technical support for HP on a contract basis).
I then called our CC, and got referred back to HP because 'We don't support
that terminal.' ARGGGGGS! Your help will be greatly appreciated... 8)

Well, if you don't have the manual on you the net is always a good
place to start :-)
Page 7-2 of the HP 2392A brick gives:
Terminal ID Status
You request the terminal ID status by issuing the following escape sequence:
<esc>*s^
The terminal responds by sending back the five-character string defined in
the Terminal ID field in the terminal configuration menu. The default
value is "2392A".
Hope this helps . . .

We have numerous HP terminals here, and all will respond to ESC*s^ with a 5-character model number followed by whatever is supposed to be sent by the RETURN key. "ESC" is the ASCII escape character \033, and the '*', 's', and '^' need to follow without intervening spaces. Some of the older terminals like to see a device-control-1 (control-Q) at the end of the escape string.
