I really don't understand why terminal manufacturers still use Z80's and the like. Computers are getting faster and cheaper all the time, but this evolution does not seem to take place for terminals. It's more like a de-evolution. I think you will find that it is much faster, and many of the things you are looking for are addressed. Not perfect, but getting better. Also the Wyse 370 is a good terminal if you are looking for a color terminal (non-graphics) for a Xenix system.
