We are in the process of evaluating the viability of using a number of X terminals / PC X-Emulators remotely. That is we wish to run up to one hundred terminals (mixed X terminals and PC's) off a largish host. Firstly these terminals are all dispersed and so must run over a serial line. Only about ten of these terminals need to be operating at any one time but I guess it is possible for all one hundred to be logged in at once but only ten will be doing something (90 idle tasks). Now what I need to know is: 1: does anyone have any experience with X terminals used remotely in this way and if so - What Terminals? What line speed is required? - I have played with an NCD at 9600 4800 and 2400 BAUD and it seems quite usable but I would like an informed user opinion. How Many terminals off a host? 2: does anyone have experience with PC X-Emulation packages running over serial lines and if so - The same questions as above. 3: What sort of host machine are we looking at here and is it feasible to run this sort of load (100 Terminals running X)? Is there a definative list of currently available X terminals that run serially (possible using compression) and PC X emulation packages that some kind soul can send me with relevant details???? If anyone has any comments at all on this I would be glad to hear from you via news or Email - If I get enough replies I will post a SUMMARY if it is of general interest. Thanks in Advance - Rodney...... ______________________________________________________________________ Rodney Campbell MHSnet: rodney@solar.card.inpu.oz.au Telecom Australia Snail: 8th Floor, 91 York Street Corporate Customer Division Sydney 2000.
