[comp.terminals] Color 3270 term options :

rbrink@hubcap.clemson.edu (Rick Brink) (09/22/90)

Manufactures of dumb terminals are limiting options in new production models.
We provide public (non-computer user) access to a large online database. We
use a 3270 based system, currently Telex 1174 controllers with color termials.
Color is needed to highlight specific fields within the display to assist novice
users. Our institution is under contract to purchase equipment from telex, so
we chose the 079 display terminal. Telex upgraded it to model # 1091 about 6
months later, with little change in operation or appearance. We have an exist-
ing base of IBM 3178 monochrome terminals that we are gradually replacing.
My problem centers on the latest upgrade of Telex's color display. The 1172,
followed within months by the 1472 display looks like a PC. They have moved
the product into a diskless workstation. Adding optimization features, access-
able to the user, and my users are not sophisticated enough to be able to un-
optimize some smart assed comp.Sci. students changes.

To circle my wagons and save you time reading this, who currently manufactures
a 3270 family, coax, color display, with minimal terminal setup options? Short
of purchasing remanufactured units, something difficult to do as a state agency
my options are narrowing.
